How to tell if a used price is fair

Quick answer
A used price is fair when it's within the middle half of recent asking prices for the same model, storage size and condition. Below that range is a good deal; under half the typical price is a red flag.
1. What is the typical price for this exact item?
Start from the median asking price of recent listings for the same model, not the average and not the first listing you see. The median ignores the handful of wildly overpriced and bait listings every marketplace has.
Example: a used Sony PlayStation 5 typically lists for $400, and half of listings fall between $300 and $450. Anything inside that range is a normal price; below it is a good one. See the price page
2. Are you comparing the same storage size and model?
Storage, memory and Pro/Max/Slim variants change the price more than most buyers expect. A great price for one variant can be an average price for another.
Example: the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max goes for $699 with 256GB and $949 with 1TB. See the price page
3. Which marketplace is it on?
The same item can be priced very differently depending on where it's listed, because each marketplace has its own buyers, fees and shipping. Check the typical price on the marketplace you're buying from, not just overall.
Example: a used Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max typically lists for $980 on OfferUp and $1,300 on Facebook Marketplace. See the price page
4. What condition is it in?
Sealed and like-new items carry a premium; scratches, battery wear, missing accessories or cracked glass take money off. Ask for photos of the problem areas and battery health on phones before agreeing to a price.
5. Is it too good to be true?
Anything under half the typical price deserves suspicion: it's often a scam, a stolen or locked device, a broken unit, or an accessory listed under the product's name. Meet in public, test the item before paying, and never pay a deposit to hold it.
Example: a Sony PlayStation 5 listed under $200 is far below anything a legitimate seller usually asks.
